Into the quiet of the forest
The Forest grew from a connection to woodland landscapes that has been with me since childhood. The forest, much like the sea, has always been a place of inspiration, discovery and a sense of belonging.
As a child, I spent time in the forest with both my father and my grandfather. My grandfather worked in forestry, and I remember walking through untouched old-growth woodland, surrounded by ancient trees, lichen and moss – experiencing the scents of resin and earth and the particular stillness of a forest allowed to grow on its own terms.
Those sensory memories have remained with me. The softness of moss beneath the hand, the scent of a flower carried through a woodland clearing, the changing light between the trees – small encounters that create a feeling of being immersed in something much larger than ourselves.
In The Forest, I wanted to translate that connection into colour, texture and movement. The layered surface evokes an organic landscape rather than depicting a specific place, inviting the viewer to move into the painting and experience something of the calm, energy and primal force I associate with the forest.
