A world within one colour
Purple Day began as an experiment in colour. I wanted to limit myself to a single colour and explore how much expression, movement and depth could emerge through its different shades and nuances.
By working within this deliberately restricted palette, subtle variations become more important. Lighter and darker passages interact across the canvas, allowing purple to shift in character and intensity as the eye moves through the composition.
Rather than using contrasting colours to create movement, I wanted the variations within purple itself to shape the experience of the painting – revealing how a single colour can contain many different expressions.
Purple Day is an exploration of what can happen when colour is both the limitation and the possibility.
