Brother & Sister
Connected, yet individual
Siblings share something from the very beginning – a unique genetic connection, traces of the same origin. Yet no two individuals are the same.
Brother & Sister explores this relationship between similarity and difference. The two paintings mirror one another without being identical. Red and blue fields shift position, while the surrounding green areas differ in structure, texture and technique.
The work also reflects on how we are shaped throughout life. We are born with our own genetic composition, but our identities continue to develop through our experiences, relationships and surroundings. Even within the same family, siblings may encounter the world – and be perceived by it – in different ways.
The surfaces are deliberately detailed and tactile. I used a variety of tools and techniques, including brushes and sharp tools such as needles, to build the different textures. The circular forms – the “eyes” – connect the two paintings visually, while their individual structures reinforce the idea of two related but distinct identities.
